Digging in the Dirt

I've decided to start a garden this year. It's something that I've been wanting to do for about 3 or 4 years, but just haven't gotten around to it. The place that we're currently renting has a nice big backyard, perfect for a garden. I decided to start small this year to see if I stick with it. My dad came over yesterday and helped me dig. So we dug up the grass in my chosen garden spot. The soil is nice and loose right now. There's quite a few dandelion weeds growing throughout the yard, so I'm going to have to be proactive in pulling those up as they come in. I'm planning to put my plants in the first or second weekend in May. I'm basically wanting salsa ingredients. So I'll be planting tomatoes, jalopeno peppers, onions. I think I may plant some green beans too. Also, I want to do some container gardening in little pots with herbs. I'm thinking cilantro, mint, lavendar, and flat-leaf parsley maybe. We'll see.

Anyways, there was something extremely therapeutic about digging in the dirt. I don't have garden gloves yet so I was using my hands. It just felt so good - I can't explain it. Today I woke up so incredibly sore, as if I had gone to a workout class yesterday. I feel pretty good about that. I had a workout and I had fun doing it. We'll see if this sticks and if I still enjoy it down the road. I'm hoping the fact that it will force me outside to maintain it will be a good thing. Sunshine always makes me feel better.
